The Government of Spain has ordered Airbnb to remove 65,935 tourist accommodation listings for violating various regional and national regulations.

This decision, backed by the High Court of Justice of Madrid, responds to the detection of multiple irregularities in the listings, such as the absence of a license number, lack of clarity on whether the host is private or professional, and the use of fake licenses.

The measure affects autonomous communities with high tourist pressure, including Andalusia, Madrid, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, and the Basque Country. In a first phase, the immediate removal of 5,800 listings has been ordered.

Airbnb has announced it will legally challenge the decision, arguing that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs lacks the authority to regulate the sector and questioning the methodology used to identify illegal listings.

Additionally, associations such as Aloja have supported the measure, considering it an important step to curb unfair competition faced by legal tourist accommodations.
